In 2023, at least 63 people, including 10 minors, lost their lives following 49 domestic fires, according to figures published Tuesday by the ASBL Oscare, a center for monitoring and research into treatments for burn victims. This is a slight decrease compared to the previous year when 75 Belgians died in such fires.

The majority of these deaths took place in Wallonia. During 2023, 33 people died there in the flames or died from their injuries, compared to 41 in 2022. It is the province of Liège which pays the heaviest price with 15 deaths, followed by the province of Hainaut which totaled 12 losses over the past year. Next come the provinces of Namur (3 deaths), Luxembourg (2 deaths) and Walloon Brabant (one death). Brussels, for its part, deplores four victims, compared to nine last year.

In Flanders, 26 deaths were recorded, one more than last year. The province of East Flanders is the most bereaved with 11 deaths, followed by Antwerp (8 deaths). In the provinces of Limburg and Flemish Brabant, three deaths were recorded in domestic fires.

Finally, only one victim was recorded in the province of West Flanders. Over the last ten years, 548 fatal house fires have been recorded in Belgium, resulting in the death of 636 people, aged 0 to 99 years. Faced with this human toll, the association is calling for a national campaign to raise awareness and prevent the risks of domestic fires.
