Surfing the Internet Reduces Risk of Dementia
Gene Alexander, a researcher at the University of Arizona and one of the study’s authors, acknowledged that the team was surprised “to find that the risk of dementia begins to increase rapidly following 10 hours of sedentary time each day, regardless of regardless of how sedentary time was accumulated.”
During the observation period, “414 people were diagnosed with incident dementia from all causes.” In older adults, the longer the sedentary behavior, the greater the threat of dementia from all causes. Volunteers who remained seated ten hours or more per day thus have an 8% greater risk to develop dementia over the next seven years. This percentage is multiplied by 8 in the case of those who remained motionless for more than twelve hours in a day.

Move every day
The site mangerbouger.fr reminds that it is necessary to practice regular physical activity: get up every two hours and move so as not to sit for too long, walk or cycle every day rather than taking the car, or even take the stairs at instead of the elevator when possible.
Practicing physical activity outside of these sedentary periods might perhaps have beneficial effects. “Further research is needed to establish causality and whether physical activity can mitigate the risk of developing dementia,” the authors conclude.
