No more account sharing, following Netflix, it’s now Costco’s turn to prevent the sharing of membership cards at the self-service checkout.
It will now be impossible for a non-member to shop at Costco. At the self-service checkout, store customers will be required to show photo ID to confirm payment per month for the Costco subscription, according to Business Insider.
The Costco company has noticed that many are sharing the Costco card between them at the time of payment, even though this action is not authorized.
It is an increasingly popular action. However, the company points out that someone who doesn’t pay for the subscription shouldn’t have the same benefits as someone who pays.
“We don’t think it’s fair that non-Costco members receive the same benefits and prices as our members,” the company told Insider.
The Privilege membership card at Costco costs $60 for two individuals from the same address. For the Executive Privilege membership card it’s $120.
The Business subscription allows you to add members at a cost of $60 for each of them.
Asking for proof of membership at checkouts might also reduce the risk of shoplifting, Costco added.
In Michigan, a Costco has already started asking for proof of identity when paying at the self-service checkout.
