Does stress cause cancer?

There is no evidence that stress can directly cause the development of cancer. However, taking care of your body’s health becomes more difficult when you’re stressed.

Sometimes, practices such as smoking, binge eating, and excessive drinking are used to cope with stress, and these habits have been linked to the development of cancer.

Stress also causes a weak immune system in the body, and coexistence with chronic stress for a long time may weaken your immune system, whose role is to protect the body from diseases and infections, and thus a weak immune system may make a person more susceptible to cancer.

And in a 2017 study of the impact of workplace stress on men with prostate cancer, researchers concluded that there is a link between prolonged exposure to workplace stress and an increased risk of developing prostate cancer before the age of 65.

Does stress cause cancer to return?

While stress cannot directly cause cancer, some research suggests that stress can cause cancer to return even following years of remission.

The studies supporting this claim have been inconclusive, and in most cases, scientists have no clue as to why cancer may re-develop following successful treatment.
