Abidjan, July 1st, 2023 (AIP) – Doctor Simon Pierre Boni, from the partnership and multisectoral service of the national cancer control program (PNLCa), announced that the cervical cancer mortality rate in Côte d ‘Ivoire will reach 102.2% by 2040.
“By 2040, if no significant programs are implemented in Côte d’Ivoire, we will see a 188% increase in cancer-related deaths, including 102.5% deaths from cervical cancer. uterus”, declared Dr Boni during a meeting of exchange and proposals on the elimination of cancer of the cervix in Côte d’Ivoire with the women of the media, which was held on Friday, June 30 2023 in Abidjan.
Speaking on the theme “Cancer of the cervix and its means of prevention”, Dr. Boni pointed out that according to the World Health Organization (WHO), Côte d’Ivoire registers 2067 new diagnosed cases each year, as well as 1417 deaths, with a late diagnosis rate of 75%.
The doctor explained that cervical cancer is caused by persistent infection with the oncogenic papillomavirus (HPV), types 16 and 18 of which are responsible for almost 70% of cases.
He also indicated that risk factors for women are early sexual intercourse (before age 18) or having multiple sexual partners. HIV infection is also a six times higher risk factor for cervical cancer.
In order to prevent and eliminate this disease, Dr. Boni mentioned the global initiative to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030, which calls for 90% of girls to be fully vaccinated once morest HPV before age 15, 70% of women are screened by age 35, and 90% of women identified as having cervical disease receive treatment.
This exchange meeting was initiated by the coalition of organizations in the fight once morest cancer (COLCC) in collaboration with the National Cancer Control Program (PNLCa), the Extended Vaccination Program (DCPEV) and the women’s network journalists and communication professionals (REFJPCI). It aims to raise awareness among women in the media regarding cervical cancer and to promote the dissemination of means of preventing this disease through vaccination.
