In the Brussels municipality of Koekelberg, two mothers and their five children were taken to hospital on Monday followingnoon due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The cause of poisoning is due to the burners in the building. This is what the Brussels firefighters said.
It was a Sibelga employee who alerted the firefighters on Monday followingnoon. The man had been sent to an apartment on the fourth floor of a building on Place Eugène Simonis in Koekelberg for the smell of gas, but on the spot, his carbon monoxide detector was triggered. The Brussels firefighters, who arrived on the spot, actually detected the presence of carbon monoxide.
“This came from the burners of the various apartments in the building”, explains Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the fire brigade. “The evacuation of combustion gases was not carried out correctly and the ventilation was insufficient. In the various apartments, the system was therefore stopped”.
The occupant of the fourth floor and her two children were taken to hospital for treatment, as were a mother and her three children, including a baby, who lived on the first floor.
Firefighters give four tips to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. “To begin, have a compliant device installed by a certified technician, have the annual maintenance and the mandatory checks carried out. Also have the flue gas exhaust checked. Ventilate, i.e. ensure natural ventilation and a supply of fresh air. Alarm, by installing approved carbon monoxide detectors. Finally, react in the event of symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, sudden fatigue, without putting yourself in danger. Open the windows, evacuate the people present and ask for help from the 112 emergency center, via the 112.be application or by telephone. »
