With more than 61,000 new cases in 2023, breast cancer remains one of the most common. It is even increasing, according to the National Cancer Institute. However, when it is diagnosed in time “we treat, we cure breast cancer”, explains Julien Seror, surgeon. Prevention thus appears to be an essential element of care. So, on the occasion of Pink October, la Fondation Cognacq-Jay took action by offering prevention workshops in Ile-de-France.
Ten of its establishments offered a free awareness course open to all. In the gardens of the town hall of the 7th arrondissement of Paris, the staff of the Saint Jean de Dieu Clinic took the time to talk regarding the importance of prevention.
Step 1: fight once morest a sedentary lifestyle
Around sixty participants were present to take part in the Pink Yoga class. “The objective is not to do an artistic performance, but to move your body and make it your own,” explains Sabrina Mecheri. A class focused on the upper body, often a source of conflict for a woman with breast cancer. This year, a group of four colleagues aged 26 to 32 responded as part of Pink October. “We’re coming on our lunch break. It’s great to understand the subject through a yoga class, it removes taboos,” they explain.
At the end of this event, participants were able to leave with a yoga mat, a t-shirt and a snack. Beyond arousing their interest in physical activity as a lever for good health, the objective is also to make them aware of starting breast self-monitoring every month, in addition to their annual appointment with the gynecologist. .
Step 2: self-examination

A silicone bust sits in the middle of the table. It presents various anomalies or lumps which should be of concern when self-palpation is carried out. “I’m 58 years old, I was never taught how to do a self-examination. I didn’t know what to look for so having this bust is really a plus,” explains one of the participants.
However, self-examination begins above all with good self-knowledge. “The message is do you know, you will help us!” explains Arnaud Hababou, radiologist. Breasts evolve, you see them every day, so you will know what is not normal. »
Step 3: diet
Diet also has an impact on health. It can be a risk factor when it is not balanced or healthy. “Diet is also an issue following diagnosis. It can have a real impact on the side effects of treatments,” explains Emma Belissa, dietitian. For example: fish, two to three times a day, is recommended. On the other hand, it doesn’t have to be salmon every time.
All the specialists kept repeating it during the awareness day: there are aggravating factors that can be avoided, but prevention does not prevent the disease. If in doubt, do not hesitate to consult a doctor, gynecologist, midwife, radiologist or surgeon.
