Dr. Lisa Ellerbee’s research team at the Buck Institute examined how calorie restriction affects brain aging in fruit fly models and human cells. The research team divided 160 types of fruit fly models with different genetic backgrounds into a group eating a normal diet and a group eating only 10% of normal nutrients.

As a result, five genes with specific mutations that significantly affected lifespan were identified. One of them was related to the human and rodent OXR1 gene.

“It was surprising to learn that a protein called OXR1 is involved in the protein complex retromer, which is essential for cellular protein and lipid recycling,” said Dr. Ellerbee. “A simple change in diet can increase OXR1 levels in the brain, which may make the brain more resilient. “There is,” he explained.
