An awareness campaign aimed at preventing the risks linked to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Morocco was launched jointly by the “One Health Morocco” Association and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Under this year’s theme, “Together, let’s prevent antimicrobial resistance”, this campaign aims to raise awareness among the Moroccan population of the dangers of AMR, aligned with the Moroccan Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Antimicrobial Resistance.

AMR represents a major global challenge with serious consequences for human, animal and plant health, food and the environment. Alarming global statistics indicate that each year, 700,000 deaths are attributable to antibiotic-resistant infections, with a projection of 10 million deaths by 2050 without effective measures.

Although Morocco does not yet have a national AMR surveillance system, studies carried out in University Hospitals (CHU) since 2004 have revealed a significant increase in resistance rates. These studies highlight the urgency of raising awareness among the population and taking preventive measures.

The President of One Health Morocco, Ms. Rajae El Aouad, stressed the importance of proactive action in the face of the rapid growth of antimicrobial resistance in Morocco. The campaign aims to mobilize the general public and professionals in human, animal and agricultural health to address this pressing threat.

‘One Health Morocco’ is committed to supporting national initiatives, in collaboration with the Moroccan Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture, through the National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA). This targeted campaign aligns with the objectives of the National Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Antimicrobial Resistance, including surveillance, research, optimization of antibiotic use, reduction of the incidence of infections, raising awareness and strengthening governance.

The ‘One Health Morocco’ Association is mobilizing its resources and multidisciplinary expertise to contribute to the success of this national strategic plan and calls for the collaboration of all stakeholders to preserve the health of the Moroccan population in the face of this global health challenge.
