Preventing Alzheimer’s Disease: Insights from Dr. David Holtzman

2023-12-16 05:30:00

Dr. David Holtzman, lead author of the study and professor of neurology, explains: “As many people age, some amyloid accumulation occurs in the brain. Initially, they remain cognitively normal. But following many years, the amyloid deposition begins to accumulate Tau protein. When this happens, cognitive impairment soon occurs. If we can find a way to mimic the effects of the APOE Christchurch mutation, we may be able to prevent people who are already on the path to Alzheimer’s “Dementia patients should continue on this path. This might lead to the development of new drugs that mimic the effects of the mutation and prevent the amyloid in the brains of those affected from developing into Alzheimer’s disease.”
