Prediabetes is a precursor to diabetes – and, in contrast, is reversible. Therefore, pay attention to its typical risk factors.
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) with a condition called prediabetes. According to information from the AOK health magazine This is a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Those affected not only have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, but also of cardiovascular diseases. In order to prevent the development of diabetes, the risk factors of its usually symptomless precursor – prediabetes – should be avoided.

It is characterized by the fact that blood sugar levels are already elevated. However, these are not yet so high that one can speak of type 2 diabetes. In addition to demonstrably elevated blood sugar levels, there are no other noticeable signs that clearly indicate prediabetes. Instead, those affected usually have no symptoms at all. It is all the more important to know the following risk factors that promote prediabetes:
- Overweight
- low physical activity and exercise
- large waist circumference
- Smoke
- meat-heavy diet
- high-sugar diet
- advanced age (over 45 years)
- Sleep apnea
- Type 2 diabetes in the immediate family environment (parents, siblings)

Existing type 2 diabetes cannot be reversed. Things are different with prediabetes. In order to be able to counteract possible prediabetes, it should be recognized in good time. It is therefore important to seek advice from a doctor if some of the risk factors apply to you.
