Doctors define gestational diabetes as a glucose tolerance disorder that occurs during pregnancy for several reasons, represented by genetic predisposition, obesity, insulin resistance, and unhealthy nutrition, warning of its danger to the health of both mother and child.

The German Federal Center for Nutrition stated that gestational diabetes raises the mother’s risk of developing high blood pressure during pregnancy, urinary tract infection, premature delivery and obstetric complications, and it also raises her risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in the long term.

For the baby, gestational diabetes raises the risk of excess birth weight and birth complications, and increases the long-term risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

To avoid these serious risks, the center stressed the need to treat gestational diabetes as soon as its symptoms are noticed, which are extreme thirst, frequent urination, weakness and fatigue.

Gestational diabetes can be treated by adjusting the diet, as it should reduce sugars and fats and increase foods rich in dietary fiber such as vegetables, fruits and whole grain products, in addition to persevering in exercise and motor activities.
