In early March, several organizations, including the National Democratic Institute and Alioune Tine’s Afrikajom Center, lobbied to ease tensions and obtain a postponement of the defamation trial between Mame Mbaye Niang and Ousmane Sonko, principal opposing Macky Sall.
Reached by PressAfrik, the Director of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) indicated that their vocation was not to interfere in Senegalese courts or to cancel an ongoing trial.

“We do not know the merits of the case and our vocation is not to have a trial annulled. What we are doing is creating the conditions for dialogue between the parties so that peace can return. This is what we have been doing since the local elections (January 2022) and the last legislative elections last July. We are working to ensure that everyone’s rights are respected and that the next elections can take place in peace.”Mr. Ayodokoun said.
