The opening of the exhibition will take place on October 10, 2023 at 6 p.m.

The exhibition Lill Tschudi – Franz Čižek. A delightful sort of game examines the relationships between artistic practice and teaching in the 20th century by putting two characters in dialogue in a special way. The focus of the compilation is the print work of the Swiss artist Lill Tschudi (1911-2004), which is being shown in Austria for the first time as part of a cooperation between the Angewandte and the Graphic Collection ETH Zurich. The Vienna show expands this monographic perspective by highlighting references to Tschudi’s works and the holdings from the Angewandte’s art collection and archive, which document the reform pedagogy of the artist Franz Čižek (1865-1946), who taught in Vienna.

The exhibition examines the new status of children’s artistic work as an independent, exemplary practice worthy of exhibition and the function of comparatively simple techniques such as linocut, as embodied in Čižek’s and also in Claude Flight’s (Claude Flight, British artist, 1881-1955) teachings as well as established and used in Tschudi’s artistic practice, in their relationship to social transformations and artistic innovation.

In the new exhibition, personal, historical and formal connections between Lill Tschudi’s and Franz Čižek’s practices are made legible through playful layering and cross-sections and discussed in their relationship to international formations and questions of modernity.
