The Office of the President announced that 28 Korean nationals who had stayed in Sudan boarded a Korean military aircraft at Port Sudan Airport and took off.
Lim Jong-deuk, the 2nd deputy director of the National Security Office, held an emergency briefing tonight and announced that 28 Koreans aboard a military aircraft will move to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, change to a large transport aircraft KC-330 waiting for them, and go directly to Seoul Airport in Seongnam.
A total of 29 Koreans residing in Sudan said that one wished to remain.
In addition, following moving to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, two people who do not want to return immediately remain, and the remaining 26 people are scheduled to arrive at Seongnam Seoul Airport around 4:00 pm tomorrow.
Lim explained the contents of the operation, saying that the citizens who escaped Sudan departed from the capital, Khartoum, and traveled by land to the northeastern port city of Port Sudan, boarded a C-130 military aircraft.
In this operation, several Japanese staying in the area also escaped together.
Deputy General Lim explained, ″Operation Promise was successfully carried out under extremely difficult conditions due to the armed conflict in Sudan over the past 10 days, and all 28 Koreans wishing to evacuate were safely evacuated from the danger area.″ .
During Operation Promise, President Yoon Seok-yeol received a real-time report on the situation and, from the beginning, ordered the urgent dispatch of a South Korean military aircraft, the Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin ship from the Cheonghae Unit, and security personnel from the Special Warfare Unit.
Deputy Director Lim said that President Yoon received a report from the head of the National Security Office on the matter even on the plane heading to the United States.
Vice Admiral Lim evaluated, “As a result, Air Force and Navy assets were pre-deployed in the waters near Djibouti and Sudan, so that we might be prepared to respond to any situation.”
In addition, he said, ″The UAE, which President Yoon visited as a state guest last January, played a significant role, and I deeply appreciate the active cooperation of allies such as the United States and Saudi Arabia.”
Relevant ministries will check the health status of Koreans arriving in Korea and take measures to ensure that necessary conveniences are provided.
Cho Tae-yong, head of the National Security Office, who had previously been scheduled to visit the United States, remained in Korea and directed the safe evacuation of Koreans in accordance with President Yoon’s instructions.
