On the 16th (local time), the President’s office said regarding the summit meeting between President Yoon Seok-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, “It is still too early to predict the timing.” While the two countries expressed their sympathy for restoring shuttle diplomacy between the leaders, they drew a line when discussing the possibility of a summit in February. A high-ranking official in the presidential office met with reporters in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where President Yoon is on a state visit, and said, “We are currently discussing intensively, taking into account the various opinions of related parties, such as being a victim of (forced labor). It will be decided later,” he said.

He emphasized that the two countries have a clear will to improve Korea-Japan relations, such as the restoration of shuttle diplomacy. This high-ranking official said, “(In previous meetings), the two leaders agreed on the need for high-level exchanges other than the summit, and agreed on the restoration of so-called shuttle diplomacy.” He continued, “Prior to the restoration of shuttle diplomacy, both leaders are concentrating on resolving related issues and improving Korea-Japan relations, so we are focusing on that.” As soon as the strands are settled on the issue of compensation for forced labor in Japan, the biggest pending issue in Korea-Japan relations, the summit between Korea and Japan is expected to pick up steam.

Regarding President Yoon’s remarks during a state visit to the UAE, “The UAE’s enemy and most threatening country is Iran,” it said, “The purpose is to encourage our soldiers.” This high-ranking official said, “The intention is to work hard while facing the severe security reality facing the UAE,” and said, “The remarks have nothing to do with the current bilateral relationship between Korea and Iran.”

Earlier, on the 15th, the second day of the state visit, President Yoon said, “The UAE’s enemy, the most threatening country, is Iran, and our enemy is North Korea,” at a meeting with the UAE Military Training Cooperation Corps (ARK Unit). President Yoon went on to say, “The two countries have various military cooperation and share many military information technologies,” adding, “We and the UAE are in a very similar position.”
