Yoon Ki-joong (92), the father of President Yoon Seok-yeol, an emeritus professor at Yonsei University, passed away on the 15th. Kim Eun-hye, chief of public relations, said in a briefing that day, “President Yoon visited the hospital following the Liberation Day ceremony this morning to watch over his father’s deathbed.” It is known that Professor Yoon was recently hospitalized at Seoul National University Hospital in Yeongeon-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul due to old age. Professor Yoon passed away 20 minutes following President Yoon arrived. His funeral will be held as a family funeral for three days at Severance Hospital in Sinchon-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. President Yoon, the resident, arrived at his funeral home at 6:10 pm on the same day and greeted the condolences. Initially, the presidential office announced that it would decline harmony and condolences, but the procession of condolences by political figures continued. From the government, Prime Minister Han Deok-soo, Deputy Prime Minister for Economy and Minister of Strategy and Finance Chu Kyung-ho, and Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Education Lee Ju-ho visited the funeral and comforted President Yoon and First Lady Kim Kun-hee. Former President Lee Myung-bak personally paid condolences, and former President Moon Jae-in said with harmony, “I feel very sad because I have a special heart for my father. It is known that the message was delivered through Chief of Staff Kim Dae-ki, saying, “I hope the heartache is not too great.” It is said that former Presidents Park Geun-hye and former President Kim Young-sam’s son Kim Hyeon-chul also sent flowers. In the National Assembly, National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo, People’s Power Representative Kim Ki-hyun, Democratic Party Representative Lee Jae-myeong, and former Democratic Party Representative Lee Nak-yeon came to commemorate the deceased, and Dong-gwan Lee, candidate for the Korea Communications Commission, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and Jang Je-won, who is considered close to President Yoon, People’s Power Members of the parliament also showed their faces. A key official in the presidential office said, “The last thing Professor Yoon said to President Yoon when he was conscious recently, not just before his death, was ‘Thank you for growing up well.'”

Born in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, Professor Yoon worked as a professor at Hanyang University following graduating from Gongju Agricultural High School and Yonsei University’s Department of Economics and the same graduate school (Master’s). Later, in 1967, right following the establishment of diplomatic ties between Korea and Japan, he was selected as the first government scholarship student by the Japanese Ministry of Education and went to study at Hitotsubashi University in Japan. From 1968 to 1997, right following he returned to Korea, he served as a professor at the Department of Applied Statistics at Yonsei University. Professor Yoon is known to have influenced President Yoon so much that he said, “My father was my first mentor.” When President Yoon entered Seoul National University’s law school, he presented Milton Friedman’s book, “Freedom to Choose,” as a gift to President Yoon. In a media interview, he said that it was a book that had a great influence on him, “to the extent that he carried it with him every day until he became a researcher in the (swordsman) mid-slaughter department in 2006.” President Yoon’s emphasis on freedom in all fields, including state administration and diplomacy, by mentioning “freedom” 35 times in his inaugural address, is interpreted as being influenced by this.

In a congratulatory speech at Yonsei University’s graduation ceremony last February, President Yoon told an anecdote that “I did vacation homework and solved math problems in my father’s lab.” When he visited Tokyo, Japan last March, he told his advisors the story of drinking coffee at the Imperial Hotel with Professor Yoon when he was a child. In December 2021, when he was a candidate for the presidential election, he appeared on an entertainment show and said, “When I was a college student, I drank and went around late at night, and my father got me a lot of trouble. He was even beaten.”

Depending on the funeral schedule, it seems that President Yoon’s departure time will be adjusted on the 17th. President Yoon is scheduled to depart on the 17th to attend the Korea-US-Japan Summit to be held in Camp David, Maryland, USA on the 18th (local time). On the other hand, this is the first time the father has been mourned during the incumbent president’s tenure, and it is the second time since then-President Moon Jae-in’s mother died in 2019.
