President Yoon Seok-yeol’s Openness to Discussions on Extended Deterrence with the US and Japan at Korea-US-Japan Trilateral Summit

President Yoon Seok-yeol announced that he was open to separate discussions with the United States and Japan on extended deterrence ahead of the Korea-US-Japan trilateral summit held at Camp David on the 18th local time.

In a written interview with Bloomberg reported today, President Yoon said, “The complete denuclearization of North Korea is a clear and consistent goal of the international community, including South Korea and the United States.”

Bloomberg reported that President Yoon said that the world would never recognize North Korea as a nuclear weapons state, and that a breakthrough might be made in discussions on deterrence with the United States and Japan at a future Korea-US-Japan summit.

President Yoon also announced that there will be discussions on how to strengthen defense training among the three countries at this meeting.

Regarding sanctions once morest North Korea, President Yoon said that the international community, including South Korea, the United States and Japan, will strictly and thoroughly implement the UN Security Council’s sanctions resolution, Bloomberg reported.

In particular, President Yoon said that he would focus on blocking North Korea’s illegal cyber activities used to finance the development of weapons of mass destruction. North Korea needs to realize that it is only going to deepen,” he said.

Regarding items such as semiconductors and batteries, President Yoon said, “We plan to discuss concrete measures to strengthen cooperation, such as early sharing of supply chain information among the three countries and establishment of an Early Warning System (EWS).”

When asked regarding South Korea’s position regarding Japan, the Netherlands, and others’ participation in the US plan to restrict exports of certain materials to China, “Korea, as a responsible member of the international community, “We will continue to have close consultations with major countries on the operation of export control systems,” he said.

At this meeting, President Yoon cited “a further solidification of the framework for cooperation to strengthen the resilience of the supply chain” as what he expected in relation to economic cooperation.

In addition, Bloomberg said, “We will strengthen joint research and cooperation in new technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence), quantum, and space, which are future growth engines, and work together to establish global standards.”
