President Yoon Seok-yeol visited the USS Strategic Nuclear Submarine (SSBN) and USS Kentucky, which called in South Korea, and said, “This demonstrates the will of the two countries to strengthen the implementation of extended deterrence.”

President Yoon visited the Busan Naval Operations Command on the followingnoon of the 19th and said, “I understand that it is the first time for a president of a friendly country to visit a (US) strategic nuclear submarine.”

Referring to the first Korea-U.S. Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) meeting held yesterday, President Yoon said, “The ROK and the U.S. will discuss joint planning and execution of nuclear operations that combine nuclear and non-nuclear assets, and enhance visibility of the deployment of US strategic assets around the Korean Peninsula.” I decided to do it,” he explained.

“Through this, we have made it clear that North Korea cannot dream of nuclear provocations, and that it will lead to the end of the regime if North Korea does provocations,” he said. We will respond overwhelmingly and resolutely to North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile threat.”

USS Kentucky is an Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarine, the flagship strategic nuclear submarine of the United States, and carries up to 20 submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) nuclear missiles.

It has been 42 years since the USS Robert Lee in 1981 that a US strategic nuclear submarine has docked in Korea. The fact of the call was revealed at the press conference.

Coordinator Campbell said, “The fact that one side showed substantive consultations (with the NCG) and that the US nuclear strategic submarine made a timely call in Busan on the same day not only contributes to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, but also continues to strongly trust nuclear (extended) deterrence. It is a series of activities that show the will to make it happen.”
