Studio Head Dies in Plane Crash the Same Day as His Boss Releases New Film
The studio confirmed the tragic loss on Saturday, with a statement expressing their profound sadness. “Steve was a cherished member of our team for more than eight years and well-beloved in the community of Atlanta. It’s hard to imagine not seeing him smiling throughout the halls. We will miss him dearly. Our heart goes out to his family as we all send them our prayers,” the statement read.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, which occurred in Homosassa, about 60 miles north of Tampa. Photos from the scene show the plane upside down on a roadway.
The single-engine Vans RV-12IS was registered to Mensch at his home address in the Atlanta suburb of Fayetteville, according to FAA records.
Mensch was instrumental in helping advocate for and maintain Georgia’s substantial film tax credit programme, which exceeds 1.0 billion US dollars (£780 million) annually.
These generous subsidies have transformed Georgia into a powerhouse of film and television production, establishing the state as a key player in the entertainment industry.
Mensch’s journey in the movie business began when he joined Feature Systems, a provider of equipment for the film industry. His expertise led him to Tyler Perry, who hired him in 2016 to contribute to the creation and management of Perry’s eponymous studio.
The expansive 330-acre studio thrives on a former Army base in southern Atlanta which Perry acquired in 2015.
Tragically, Mensch’s death coincided with the release of Perry’s latest film, The Six Triple Eight, a war drama focusing on an all-female, predominantly Black unit that served during World War II. Production on the film took place at Perry’s Atlanta studios.
Mensch is survived by his wife, Danila, and their three children.
* Given Mensch’s crucial role, what potential challenges or changes might Tyler Perry Studios face in his absence?
