The President of the Constituent Council, Beatriz Hevia, He showed his caution and avoided getting into controversy over the figure of the dictator Augusto Pinochet, marking differences with his colleagues in the Republican Party, such as Louis Silva.
This was made evident during the TVN National State program, following being consulted for her opinion on the figure of Pinochet and the violations of Human Rights committed during the dictatorship.
In this line, taking as context the condemnation of the Chamber of Deputies to the statements of the constituent council, Luis Silva, who described the dictator Pinochet as a “statesman”, Hevia ignored the fact, noting that “Congress has all the powers to approve the projects it deems appropriate.”
“With Luis Alejandro (Silva) we are learning in this relationship with the media,” he tried to justify.
Beatriz Hevia avoids being honest regarding her position on Pinochet: “I was born in 1992 (…) it doesn’t make sense”
However, when asked if Pinochet is a statesman for her, Hevia responded by pointing out that “My role today is to look to the future, I was born in 1992, I think I am referring to events that I did not experience, that I do not know in detail beyond what one can know and learn by reading or talking to different people, it does not have sense”.
“I think my role, along with Vice President Aldo Ovalle, is to generate meeting points,” he added.
“If we start from issues that we know can generate noise or divide Chileans, it is a mistake. Maybe on December 18 we can talk regarding these points, today it would be irresponsible on my part and with the role that I think I should fulfill ”, added.
“I think that our task is not to bury one or another Constitution. Our task is to propose a constitutional text that allows families to be given certainty and stability for the next thirty, forty or fifty years”, he opined.
When insisting on condemning the human rights violations committed during the dictatorship, Hevia replied that “It is a conversation that we can have as of December 18, when we finish this constitutional process, and I think that the opinion that I may have for one sector or another may not be the appropriate one.”
“I want to have a process that calls and convenes all sectors and not entrench anyone,” he replied.
“One of the concerns, precisely that we have in the constitutional text, is respect for human rights. And I think that this is a transversal agreement that we have regarding the protection of life and many other fundamental rights that people have, ”he said.
“I do not agree with the violation of Human Rights of any kind, but I do not want to enter into a discussion that will not serve to find meeting points looking forward,” Hevia insisted.
Hevia and Health: “I would prefer that we remain in mixed health provision”
Regarding the issues that will be dealt with in the proposed new Constitution, Hevia outlined the positions that they will have as Republicans, on issues such as Health, Pensions and Education.
In Health, for example, he emphasized the “right to choose of people”, assuring that “it is a mistake to look at a health system for those who provide me with the service, if not what we must give is different alternatives so that people can access timely health.”
“Personally, I would prefer that we remain in mixed health provision,” said the Republican Party adviser.
In pension matters, on the other hand, Hevia pointed out that “property over the funds and the heritability of the funds is consecrated.”
“Who has to manage them? Personally, I prefer it to be a private entity, but it is also something open to discussion, ”she clarified.
Hevia once morest free university education
On Education, Hevia was once morest the free College Education, estimating that the priority should be the preschool stage and basic education.
“You have to start there rather than continue insisting on a free university education,” said the president of the Constituent Council.
“Those who do not have the possibility of paying for their university education, can effectively access, for example, a free education to the extent that it is financially sustainable for the State. It seems reasonable to me.” sentenced.
Also, Hevia also disagreed with a parity formula, at least, from the start.
“When we have parity at the start, what we are doing is telling a citizen that their vote is not worth that much and I am not going to respect the will of whoever represents them the most,” he said.
Finally, Hevia defended the presence of the Republican Party in the Council, despite the fact that they were removed from being part of the Agreement that allowed the constituent process to continue.
“Once it was democratically defined that there is a constitutional process and even when it is not the mechanism that we considered the correct one, it is installed and established, we have every right and duty to the citizenry to participate,” he explained.
“Republicans have never closed themselves to making changes to the Constitution,” he said.
