President Murmu Calls for Extensive Research in Ayurveda

Unlocking Ancient Wisdom: President Murmu Urges Extensive Research in Ayurveda

President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the need for comprehensive research in Ayurveda, asserting that it holds remedies for a wide range of ailments.

Addressing the 75th Foundation Day celebration of Gopabandhu Ayurveda College, President Murmu highlighted the powerful connection between human well-being and nature. "A person can remain disease-free throughout their life by staying connected with yoga and nature," she stated.

President Murmu underscored the importance of scientific validation for traditional practices. "Research is capable of proving the scientific basis of any method. Evidence builds trust among people, and trust widens the path of acceptance," she explained, encouraging Ayurveda students to delve deeper into research within their field.

Recalling the traditional knowledge passed down through generations in her Santal community in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, President Murmu highlighted the wealth of healing wisdom held by indigenous communities.

"I am aware of the method of treatment prevalent among tribal people for treating certain diseases," she shared. "Some elder tribal people possess extensive knowledge about various diseases and the herbs needed to treat them."

Expressing concern over the gradual erosion of this traditional knowledge, President Murmu urged the younger generation to step up and preserve it. "This traditional knowledge is slowly disappearing. I hope some of you (students) will be interested in exploring the scientific basis of that treatment," she said, emphasizing its potential benefits for society. "By doing so, the method can be saved from extinction and also be beneficial to the community."

President Murmu further directed attention to Odisha’s palm leaf manuscripts, preserved at the State Museum and held in private collections. These manuscripts, she suggested, contain invaluable information regarding Ayurveda, possibly holding hidden treatments waiting to be discovered through research.

"Apart from literature, these palm-leaf manuscripts contain descriptions of medical methods," she noted. "I hope you will make efforts to bring our hidden treatment methods to the public by doing research."

Observing a global surge in interest in Yoga and Ayurveda, President Murmu highlighted the growing recognition of ancient Indian wellness practices.

"People around the world are eager to learn Yoga and Ayurveda," she noted, adding, "By maintaining a balanced diet, we can stay healthy. Yoga can help to keep diseases at bay.” She delivered the popular adage, "Be Yoga Yukta to remain Roga Mukta" (remain connected with Yoga to be free from diseases), emphasizing the importance of incorporating yoga into daily life.

President Murmu concluded by reiterating her belief in the healing power of Ayurveda, urging students to dedicate themselves to extensive research in this field. The event was also graced by Odisha Governor Raghubar Das, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, and other dignitaries.
