SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican President Luis Abinader announced this Sunday his aspirations to run for a second four-year term and, as such, will participate in the internal elections of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

“After deep reflection, I understood that the country is above my family or personal peace of mind, which is why I am announcing today my decision to participate in the internal elections of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), to be its candidate for the Presidency of the Republic in the 2024 elections,” Abinader announced.

The ruler made his decision known through a video on his social networks. The president is visiting New York City, where this Sunday he led the Great Dominican Parade that is held every year in that city.

Do you remember how we were three years ago? Deserted streets, closed businesses, and everyone confined at home, there was uncertainty, but in the face of each challenge we maintained a firm will and our hope never faded, “said the head of state in relation to the pandemic.

In that order, he added, “honesty gained citizen trust, that trust gave me the determination to work tirelessly to obtain vaccines when almost no country was able to get them, reopen tourism and reactivate economic growth that allowed the lost jobs to be recovered.”

Abinader’s announcement was expected by the entire country, since for months many of its officials and leaders of the PRM have proclaimed that he should continue at the helm of the State.

The Dominican Constitution allows consecutive re-election and never run for office once more.

The president should not have any problem to win the primaries of his organization.

The Dominican presidential elections will be held on the third Sunday of May 2024, the same day as the legislative elections.

Abinader won the 2020 presidential elections in the first round, with 53.11% of the votes, beating the candidate of the then-government Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) Gonzalo Castillo.

«In a few months you will have to choose if you prefer to continue with more honesty in politics. I know your answer, because I know you, you are part of a noble and decent people, you know that this is not the time to go back,” said the president.

The Dominican president is a leader in the polls that are frequently published in the country, some of which show him as the favorite to win in the first round.
