“We have lost a philology grandmaster, a developer of the world-renowned Lithuanian school of semiotics, a fosterer of the deep art of understanding literary works,” reads the president’s condolences released on Tuesday.
“I am sure that K. Nastopka’s scientific and creative legacy will continue to shape the vision and direction of activities of the literary community for a long time,” says the head of the country.
According to G. Nausėda, K. Nastopka’s productivity, dedication to literature and scientific research was “a distinctive feature of this famous personality”.
For his part, the Minister of Culture Simonas Kairys writes in his condolences that the development of semiotics in Lithuania is associated with K. Nastopka.
“Kęstutis Nastopka dedicated his life to literature and the art of perceiving its works, and also built literary bridges with his Latvian neighbors. I hope that the work of the professor will be continued with the same love and dedication by a large group of his students”, says the minister.
Literary expert, semiotician, translator, literary critic K. Nastopka died in his 80s.
He worked at the Institute of Lithuanian Language and Literature, taught at the Vilnius and Lithuanian Universities of Education, and served as the head of several departments.
K. Nastopka established the principles of linguistic poetics, structural and semiotic analysis in the science and criticism of Lithuanian literature, opposed the realist concept of literature, explained the meaning of literature with the concepts of semiotics, published several books, a collection of articles and essays, translated from French and Latvian.
K. Nastopka was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize in 2012, the Knight’s Cross of the Order “For Merit to Lithuania” in 2015, and he also received the Latvian Three Stars and the French Academic Palms Cavalier.
