The President had to cancel his campaign appearances for the time being due to health problems.
In Europe, Turks abroad have been able to cast their votes for the elections on May 14 since Thursday – but they have to do without Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s encouragement: the president canceled an appearance on Turkish foreign television stations for health reasons. For two days now, the 69-year-old has had to cancel his election campaign appearances in Anatolia following a fainting spell. He was only able to take part in the inauguration of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant on Thursday via video link.
Erdoğan’s health problems reveal a political weakness. Because the President actually wanted to go on the offensive this week to get out of a poll low.
„Oh weh, oh weh”
Erdoğan’s troubles began on Tuesday. After a long day of campaigning, the President wanted to give an interview to a pro-government TV station that evening. First, the start of the program was delayed, then he began to wheeze during a journalist’s question. The camera stayed on the questioner, who looked worriedly at the President and hissed at his staff to interrupt the interview for a commercial break.
“Oh wow, oh wow,” Erdoğan’s voice was heard, then the live broadcast ended. When Erdoğan reappeared on screen 20 minutes later, he apologized to viewers: he had an upset stomach. The show ended shortly therefollowing.
