This Saturday, October 14, Pope Francis received in audience President Dina Boluarte, who wore black clothing as a result of the so-called “White Privilege.” The president was accompanied by a delegation, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ana Cecilia Gervasi.

“During the cordial discussions at the Secretariat of State, satisfaction was expressed for the good relations between Peru and the Holy See, underlining the positive collaboration between the Church and the State in view of the promotion of moral values, the common good, dialogue and the construction of social peace. In the continuation of the conversations, there was an exchange of points of view on the sociopolitical situation of the Region, with special attention to the phenomenon of migration and the impact of climate change,” the Holy See reported in a statement.

Meanwhile, according to TV Perú, the meeting between Boluarte and representatives of the Holy See lasted approximately half an hour and they prayed for peace in the country and the safety of the population in the face of climate change.

At the end of the audience, Pope Francis presented the president with a bronze figure of a flower blooming with the inscription “Peace is a fragile flower.” He also gifted volumes of papal documents; this year’s Message for Peace; the Document on Human Fraternity and the book on the Statio Orbis of March 27, 2020.

In turn, President Dina Boluarte offered a Peruvian silver tray, an image of the Holy Family and typical sweets from the country.

After the audience with Pope Francis, the head of state met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, secretary of state, and Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher, secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.

In this way, the president’s questioned tour of Europe ends, which coincided with the requests of fellow citizens who were stranded in Israel following the Hamas terrorist attack.

President Dina Boluarte, as well as Chancellor Ana Gervasi, attended her audience with Pope Francis in black due to the “White Privilege”, a protocol established in the Vatican that only applies to women.

The so-called “White Privilege” is a grace granted by the Holy See to Catholic queens and consorts of Catholic monarchs to wear white clothing on official visits to the Vatican, private audiences with the Pope and at beatifications, canonizations and masses. The rest of the women who do not meet this requirement are required to wear black.

The relatives of the more than 60 people who died in the protests once morest President Dina Boluarte in December 2022 and January of this year sent a letter to the Apostolic Nunciature of Lima so that it might be sent to Pope Francis. The objective of the communication was to request the Supreme Pontiff not to receive the Head of State at the Holy See.

“Today, the person responsible for these violations of human rights would try to clean up his image by deploying denialist and deceptive diplomacy. “Dina Boluarte seeks to find in foreign relations the approval and legitimacy that she never obtained at the polls in her own country,” she reads in the letter.

“We consider that the official visit announced by Dina Boluarte to His Holiness is not in accordance with the good policy indicated by the Church, it is rather necessary to advance in the search for justice so that the Peruvian people faithful in faith in Christ find a light between darkness, recovering hope in a better tomorrow,” the mourners add.
