Asunción, IP Agency.- During his speech at the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit held in Santo Domingo, the head of state, Mario Abdo Benítez, condemned the decision of the Government of Nicaragua to withdraw the nationality of 94 political opponents of that country. He also lamented the situation that Ukraine is experiencing in the face of the Russian invasion, more than a year ago.
Before the plenary session of the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit in the Dominican Republic, the Paraguayan president accompanied the concern and condemnation made by the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, regarding the situation in Nicaragua, where the government of Daniel Ortega has taken what he considered as “unfair and arbitrary decisions”.
“More than 94 Nicaraguans lost or tried to lose their nationality, I am sure that many of them are more Nicaraguan than many of those who are making these arbitrary and unfair decisions today,” said Abdo Benítez.
In this regard, he said that one of those affected is the writer Sergio Ramírez, Cervantes Prize winner, who was stripped not only of his nationality but also his property.
At another time, the president condemned the tragic event that the European continent is experiencing with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as the migratory diaspora that the region is experiencing, these are issues that must be addressed permanently, he assured.
“Respect for human rights, for public liberties, are assets of democracy that have nothing to do with the left or the right, it has to do with basic principles of harmonious coexistence,” he argued while advocating for the construction of exit itineraries to the crises mentioned during the summit.
“I take this opportunity to say goodbye, it is my last summit as Head of State, I have had the great honor of serving my country in these difficult years that fell to all of us, thank you for the solidarity that I have received and my people have received in this At the same time, wish President Guillermo Lasso (Ecuador) every success as the next president pro tempore. Paraguay will always continue to be a great defender of the principles that we were debating today at this summit”, he commented at the end.
