Important statement to the nation from President Christian Vabé regarding the attempted escape of the ousted President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum
Sad and stunned to learn of the attempted escape of the ousted president of Niger Mohamed Bazoum.
Sad that it was confirmed by the Nigerian justice system and that 23 people were arrested, including eight students, in connection with this case.
Indeed sad to note that before the Niamey Court of Appeal, the Attorney General accused the deposed President Mohamed Bazoum of having tried to escape.
The attorney general at the Niamey Court of Appeal in fact affirmed, on Tuesday October 31, 2023, that the deposed president of Niger, overthrown by a coup d’état at the end of July and under house arrest at the presidential palace, had indeed tried to escape on the night of October 18 to 19.
“On the night of October 18 to 19,” former President Bazoum, “his family, his security and his cooks, carrying various packages, were arrested” by “agents of the presidential guard, while they were heading towards the exit of the palace,” said Mr. Chaïbou. He added that a vehicle was waiting for them “with a view to transporting them to a house” in a district of Niamey, “identified as belonging to Mohamed Ben Hamaye, a former member of Mr. Bazoum’s close guard” and “mastermind presumed part of the operation”, specifying the destination of the rest of their planned helicopter journey: Birnin Kebbi, in north-west Nigeria.
Mr. Chaïbou affirmed that a search in the residence of the former president had led to the discovery of a sum of 86,250,000 CFA francs [131 300 euros]17,017 US dollars [16 090 euros]3 835 euros, 5 livres sterling [5,75 euros]16 yielded [1,25 euro]2,800 grams of gold, 333 grams of silver”, electronic equipment and “numerous telephone chips”, which “indicate unique uses for calls to cover their tracks”.
My feeling is that the deposed President Mohamed Bazoum is totally disconnected from reality, and that he continues to live, despite his fall, in his own world where he takes his desires for reality.
Otherwise how can we understand that at a time when France and the United States and West Africa have retreated, swallowing their demands and finally recognizing the Nigerien military junta, he decides to escape.
