Nigerian President Bola Tinubu will meet executives from Microsoft, Meta and Exxon Mobil while he is in New York next week for the United Nations General Assembly, his spokesperson said Friday.
The Nigerian leader will discuss with Microsoft Chairman Brad Smith how small businesses in the country can gain access to the internet to conduct transactions quickly, spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale said in a statement. Mr. Tinubu will meet Nick Clegg, president of global affairs of Meta technologies, and the CEOs of General Electric and Exxon Mobil, according to the statement.
Mr Tinubu is expected to leave Nigeria on Sunday for the annual gathering of world leaders, which will be held from September 18 to 26.
Mr Tinubu met US President Joe Biden at the G20 summit in India last week, following accepting Mr Biden’s invitation to meet while they were both attending the General Assembly.
“The President is focused on attracting foreign direct investment, attracting jobs and attracting new tax revenue to the shores of our country,” Mr Ngelale said.
“But he also wants to ensure that local Nigerian businesses have fair and equitable access to foreign and international markets.
Mr Ngelale said Mr Tinubu would meet leaders from the United States, Brazil, Algeria, Comoros, South Africa and the European Union. He will also meet the prime ministers of the Netherlands and Spain, as well as the king of Jordan.
Nigeria’s new government wants to encourage investment rather than resorting to borrowing to create jobs, as it tries to revive an economy struggling with record debt, a weak currency, double-digit inflation and a shortage of insufficient electricity.
Mr Tinubu has embarked on the boldest reforms in decades, which have been welcomed by investors. However, they have brought additional difficulties for Nigerians, already facing a cost of living crisis. In August, inflation in Nigeria reached its highest level in 18 years.
