U.S. President Biden, who is visiting Vietnam, was asked at a press conference on the evening of the 10th his opinion on Beijing’s accusation that the United States has a Cold War mentality. He claimed that he did not want to encircle mainland China, but he would not sell anything to China that might strengthen the Communist Party’s military power. He only wanted to ensure that U.S.-China relations were getting better and in order. Biden said that he does not believe that China’s economic difficulties will lead to an invasion of Taiwan. In fact, it may be the opposite, and China’s capabilities will be less than before.

Biden also revealed that on the second day of the Group of 20 (G20) summit in New Delhi, India, he met with Premier Li Qiang, who attended the meeting on behalf of Chinese President Xi Jinping, to discuss “stability” rather than “confrontation.”

When Biden was also asked regarding the fact that Xi Jinping had not attended the ASEAN-related summits and the G20 summit, and the two had not spoken for several months, he said that Xi Jinping was busy with China’s domestic issues, “Listen, this is not a criticism, but It’s observation, he is very busy now.” He also hopes to meet with Xi Jinping as soon as possible.

As for why the summit’s joint statement did not condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by name, Biden argued that China and Russia both sent representatives there, both countries are members of the G20, and the Russia-Ukraine war is a controversial issue that will create differences among members.
