Santo Domingo, Dec 18.- The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, stated this Monday that his country has expressed its “strong” rejection of the “illegitimate” claim to reverse the majority decision of the people of Guatemala expressed at the polls.
«No power of the State has the right to impose itself on the absolute legitimacy of the freely expressed popular will. Our region, which has had to face the scourge of dictatorships, has a historical debt to settle with democracy,” Abinader expressed in the presence of the elected president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León, who visits the country this Monday.
The Caribbean leader stated that the recent attacks once morest the “democratic process in his country remind us that we must always be vigilant and that democracy cannot be taken for granted, as it always requires a joint effort from all our nations.”
Abinader considered that democracy is the “cornerstone” on which “our societies are built, and that democracy is a continuous journey, which entails challenges, challenges and hopes, and said he is convinced that this political model is the one that will lead to “development for our people.”
Arévalo, who must assume power on January 14, was received by Abinader at the National Palace and prior to the press conference they offered, they spoke privately for regarding two hours at the Executive headquarters.
«It is very regrettable that we have witnessed attempts to undermine the legitimate results of the democratic elections in Guatemala. It is a challenge that has had an impact on the entire region, reminding us of the importance of solidarity and mutual support in the defense of shared values and democracy,” the president added.
ARÉVALO’S FATHER WAS IN THE DR
The Dominican ruler recalled that Arévalo de León’s father, the former president of Guatemala José Arévalo, was received in that same place in 1972, decorated and recognized for having welcomed fighters once morest the dictatorship in the Dominican Republic during his mandate (1945-1951). by Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961).
Arévalo, for his part, said that he particularly thanked the Government and the Dominican people for the support they have given to the people of Guatemala “at this time of struggle for democracy, where we are convinced that democracy is the only way.” true for solidarity, justice and freedom.
He argued that at this time when democracy in his country is going through difficulties, it is very important to join forces with democratic countries, large and small, so that the international system continues to advance towards policies free of dictatorships and authoritarianism.
«We are convinced that in the Dominican Republic we will have a partner for the construction of a democratic future as our people demand and deserve (…) we need to defend democracy within each of our countries and assume it as a fundamental commitment, as a practice real and daily that we must expand at the regional, Latin American and international level,” said the Guatemalan president-elect.
Arévalo de León was elected in this year’s elections and will govern for a period of four years alongside the Semilla Movement party, born from the anti-corruption fight in 2015 in Guatemala.
JUDICIAL PERSECUTION
However, since last July the Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office) began a judicial persecution once morest Arévalo de León and the Semilla Movement to prevent their coming to power, even alleging that the elections should be annulled due to administrative irregularities.
The Constitutional Court of Guatemala, the country’s highest court, assured last week that the elections are valid and an orderly transition must be registered next January.
Last Friday, the president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, once once more promised an orderly change of government next January, following a visit to the Central American country by the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro.
Arévalo de León and the OAS have classified as “coup d’état” and “attempted coup d’état”, respectively, the actions of the Prosecutor’s Office once morest the elected president, his party and the electoral magistrates.EFE
