Mozinskis Donate Land for Wildlife Management Area in North Dakota

In a generous move, Gerald Mozinski and his wife, Mary Ann, have handed over 42 acres of their land in Walsh County to the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. This land is destined to become the backbone of the newly established Mozinski Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The area is situated roughly 30 miles north of Grand Forks.

A Haven for Wildlife

The land, a cherished possession of the Mozinskis for approximately 50 years, is renowned for deer hunting. Despite suffering setbacks in recent years due to an outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease in 2021 and harsh winters, leading to a dwindling deer population, the area remains an important habitat for wildlife. The new WMA encompasses the old riverbed of the Forest River and contributes significantly to the Wetland Reserve Program, supporting the nourishment and preservation of wetlands and wildlife habitats.

A Gift that Keeps on Giving

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is set to manage the WMA and handle taxes on the land, thereby maintaining its quality habitat for public use. This arrangement eradicates the need for public permission to use the area. A dedication ceremony to commemorate the establishment of the WMA is on the cards for the summer.

Mozinskis’ Legacy

Gerald Mozinski, a lifelong hunter and fisher, has set a unique condition for the donation. He has ensured that the property will forever remain a WMA, stipulating that it cannot be sold or traded. This move guarantees the perpetual preservation of the area for future generations. Donations of this nature, while not uncommon, provide a straightforward avenue for the department to acquire more land for the expansion of the WMA system.
