Preserving Walloon Heritage: Combating Theft and Protecting Historical Excavation Sites

The Walloon Heritage Minister, Valérie De Bue, filed a complaint, via her administration, for the theft of at least three skeletons from an excavation site of the Walloon Heritage Agency, in Huppaye (Ramillies). The Walloon Region took legal action in Walloon Brabant via a complaint once morest X for burglary, and filed a civil action. The facts were committed in May and June 2023, on a construction site which was prohibited to the public.

The Huppaye excavation site has brought to light numerous remains, in particular a medieval cemetery following the 14th century, and the work is carried out under the direction of the Walloon Heritage Agency. “During the months of May and June 2023, several violations were noted on the site, access to which is nevertheless protected and totally prohibited to the public. Organized individuals stole at least three almost complete skeletons and two supernumerary skulls“, say the officials.

After learning of these facts, Minister De Bue decided that a complaint once morest X would be filed, with the Region becoming a civil party. The objective is to prevent this type of act, impacting the heritage which is a common good for all, from going unpunished. Since the beginning of the legislature, the Minister of Heritage has had to file three complaints of this type, for similar cases committed in Wéris and Tavier. She specifies that she will continue to act in this way if other cases should occur.
