(Keystone-ATS) The Crémines zoo (BE) is committed to saving a “rare friendship” between a black panther and a lioness. The two felines, dissimilar in many respects but kept together in a park in Germany, should be transferred to the Bernese Jura.

The director of the Sikypark in Crémines, Marc Zihlmann, launched an appeal on social networks so that this relocation and cohabitation project between the lioness and the panther can be carried out, we learned on Wednesday.

“These two animals grew up together and developed a special, unique friendship,” Mr. Zihlmann explains in a YouTube video: “it’s regarding preserving this unnatural love.”

The Eschede Zoo (Germany) in which Bagira the black panther (or black leopard) and the lioness Snowy are currently housed is closing its doors, and no park has agreed to collect and keep them together. The Crémines zoo, which already houses many big cats, is ready to take up the challenge by offering a unique and exclusive enclosure for the two inseparable animals.

However, this requires specific installations and adaptations, and therefore financing. “We cannot yet estimate the costs but we are launching an appeal to the public (individuals, companies, foundations, editor’s note) to help us preserve this special relationship,” says Mr. Zihlmann, with the support of the SikyFriends Association – Friends of Sikypark. Specifying that this represents a “huge challenge”.
