According to a statement from the White House, baaj nwaavjo means “where indigenous peoples roam” in Havasupai language, e i’tah flowers means “our ancestral footprints” in the Hopi language.

The monument encompasses 917,618 acres of public lands managed by the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management and the Department of Agriculture’s US Forest Service.

The designation seeks to honor Tribal Nations and Indigenous Peoples by protecting sacred ancestral sites and their historically and scientifically important features, while conserving public lands, protecting wildlife habitat and clean water, and supporting local communities. local community economies.

The White House explained that the new monument is made up of three different areas to the south, northeast and northwest of the Grand Canyon National Park.

It will be bordered by the Kanab Watershed and Kanab Creek drainage in the northwest area and the Havasupai Indian Reservation and Navajo Nation in the southern area, and extends from Marble Canyon to the edge of the Kaibab Plateau in the northeast area.
