Preserve the Kobe and Gianna Bryant Mural: Urgent Petition to Save LA’s Landmark Tribute

Following the death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna in a helicopter crash in January 2020, tributes followed one another to honor the Black Mamba, notably on the walls of certain buildings in Los Angeles. But today, one of Kobe and Gigi’s most famous murals is under direct threat, so much so that a petition has been launched.

On the corner of Grand Avenue and Pico Boulevard, just steps from Crypto.com Arena, the Kobe and Gianna Bryant mural has become a landmark for the local community and fans of the Lakers legend. But unfortunately it might well disappear in the coming weeks.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the owner of the weight room where the fresco is located received a lot of pressure from its owner, who asked her to remove it before September 30. The owner actually wishes to use the space for purposes.

Faced with this, Cecilia Moran – manager of the fitness center – decided to react by speaking publicly regarding the situation. Arriving from Peru, Moran knows that she is potentially putting her business in danger by refusing to give in to her owner’s demands, but that doesn’t matter. This mural has become an integral part of her gym, and it has even helped her economically during the COVID period.

“I want to appeal to the members of the community, to the Lakers, to the mayor of Los Angeles, to Vanessa Bryant, to the loyal fans of the Lakers not to let me down,” Moran declared in particular. “As an immigrant who came to this country with nothing to start a new life, it’s difficult, but I stand up to preserve this mural.”

Since then, a petition has been launched on Change.org by Kobe Bryant Mural Locations, petition which has more than 71,000 signatures at the time of this writing. Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s wife, notably provided her support by sharing the link to the petition on her Instagram account.

Enough to change the owner’s mind?
