Award for innovative concepts and work in the field of adult and democracy education
Vienna (PK) – The Ludo Hartmann Prizes and the Barbara Prammer Prize 2022 announced by the Association of Austrian Adult Education Centers (VÖV) were presented in Parliament today. Parliamentary Director Harald Dossi, who welcomed the award winners and invited guests on behalf of National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka, emphasized the connections between the namesakes of the prizes and the two chambers of the House of Representatives. The commitment of the former President of the National Council, Barbara Prammer, is not only to thank for the restructuring of Parliament, but also for the founding of the democracy workshop, which Dossi called a “jewel of democracy education”. The cooperation partner, the Association of Austrian Adult Education Centers, shares the effort to participate in the democracy education project. Dossi honored the works honored today with regard to their democratic-political aspects.
With 800 locations in Austria, the adult education centers offer access to education for all people in Austria and encourage them to participate in social life, emphasized VÖV Secretary General John Evers. We have been committed to these values since 1887, under the pioneering work of Ludo Hartmann. The important role of adult education centers can be further strengthened if they are perceived as strong partners of the federal, state and local governments and if their existence is secured through broad consensus beyond day-to-day political debates, he said, referring to the place where the award was presented, the High House.
The Ludo Hartmann Prize, which is worth €2,000, is aimed at employees of adult education centers who are recognized for their particularly outstanding and innovative work. This year, the two historians Christian Stifter and Robert Streibel, who in their project work that began in 2017 dealt with the victims of National Socialism in the Viennese adult education centers, received it. The Ludo Hartmann Promotional Prize (€1,000) went to the sociologist Bettina Schöngruber, who works as a project coordinator at the adult education center in Linz, for her work on digitization in adult education. The involvement of seniors as co-researchers in the development of needs-oriented offers was the focus of Jennifer Pöcher’s master’s thesis, which received the Barbara Prammer Prize (€2,000). The former VÖV General Secretary Gerhard Bisovsky was honored with a decoration.
Science prizes for exceptional work
Since 1987, innovative work in adult education has been honored with the Ludo-Hartmann-Prize or Promotional Prize. The greatest achievements of the historian Hartmann, who was born in 1865, lie in the field of popular education. At his suggestion, lecture series were combined for the first time into popular “teaching courses” in 1890. The Barbara Prammer Prize, named following the former President of the National Council, has been awarded for implemented initiatives in the field of civic education since 2015. Citizenship education is understood as the pedagogical model of practicing democratic action and thinking through lifelong learning, thus ensuring that democracy and civil society function in practice.
