Presence of vessels reported on Cuban coasts 2024-07-25 13:59:03

In recent hours, the MININT has reported the discovery of the vessels at different points along the Cuban coast.

The Cuban Ministry of the Interior (MININT) has announced the discovery of two abandoned vessels on the country’s coast. It has given the owners a period of 30 calendar days to claim them.

The Port Authority of Nueva Gerona reported the first discovery on June 22. The boat, without a motor, was found on the beach of the Villa Linda Mar Hotel, in Cayo Largo del Sur.

According to the official newspaper Granma, this vessel is white and blue, with a length of 4.80 meters, a beam of 1.10 meters and a depth of 0.35 meters. On its port and starboard sides you can read “Panda.” The hull is made of plastic and has the identification number TFT 2099, with no other additional data.

The second discovery was made by the Port Captaincy of Cárdenas on May 25, 2024. Specifically in the Juan Claro Channel, Martí municipality, Matanzas province.

This Zodiac-type boat, also without an engine, is grey with a red stripe, has a length of 2.50 metres, a width of 1.80 metres and a depth of 0.60 metres. On the port side you can read “Golden Ship”. The hull is made of rubber and plastic, with no other identifying data.

Claim or confiscation

The Department of Harbor Masters of the Border Guard Troops Directorate of the MININT has indicated that, according to article 214, paragraph c) of Decree No. 317, natural or legal persons who believe they have rights over these vessels can claim them. They must do so within 30 calendar days following the publication of this information in Granma on July 23.

To do so, they must go to the respective Harbor Master’s Offices with the documentation that legally proves the ownership or possession of the vessels.

The Nueva Gerona offices are located on 31st Street, s/n, between 18th and 20th, Nueva Gerona, Isla de la Juventud Special Municipality, while the Matanzas offices are located on Céspedes Final Street, Cárdenas Municipality.

This incident follows similar reports in the past. In March 2024, several abandoned boats were found on the Cuban coast, and in September 2023, the government confiscated a jet ski and three abandoned boats.

Every year, Cuban authorities discover abandoned boats on the archipelago’s coasts. Many of them are believed to be used by migrants trying to reach South Florida, making transfers at sea.

In addition, some of these vessels may have been abandoned by drug traffickers in the region after being detected by the authorities.
