Preparing Students for the Future: Advancing Veterinary Medicine for Global Challenges

As we face global challenges such as climate change, zoonotic diseases and the growth of the animal population, the adequate preparation of students in matters of veterinary Medicine to attend to the complexities of the future, stated the rector of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMéx), Carlos Eduardo Barrera Díaz, at the head of the fourth activity report of the director of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics, Trinidad Beltrán León.

At the Small Species Veterinary Clinic and before the Academic and Government Councils, the rector stressed that the work of veterinarians is crucial to sustain the ecosystem balance in which we live, therefore, scientific production, as well as the trajectory of full-time faculty, constitute important assets dedicated to innovation and teaching of professional and advanced study programs in veterinary medicine.

“All the projects investigation registered for this academic space have an approach applied to the objectives of sustainable development, in addition to being linked to the productive sector”, he added.

During the report, Carlos Eduardo Barrera Díaz made the symbolic delivery of veterinary medical equipment consisting of a tomograph, infusion pumps and a flat panel, state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment.

For her part, Trinidad Beltrán León highlighted that the Degree in Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics maintains its accreditation nationally and internationally by the National Council for the Education of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics and the Pan-American Council on Veterinary Sciences, this being one of the five programs of the Mexican Autonomous University recognized internationally.

In the reporting period, he said, the Faculty has 12 academic bodies, of which nine are consolidated, one in consolidation and two in formation; In addition, it has the record of 22 research projects, of which 72.7 percent have financing.

Finally, Beltrán León pointed out that during these four years of management, the purpose of this faculty was to manage the resources for teaching and professional training aimed at meeting the Sustainable Development Goals.
