A solar storm that will occur on Thursday of next week will give residents of 17 US states the chance to see aurora borealis, the colorful phenomenon that occurs when solar winds impact the atmosphere.
The Northern Lights are usually seen in Alaska, Canada and Scandinavia but an 11-year solar cycle is expected to peak in 2024, making the lights visible far to the south.
Three months ago, this phenomenon was seen in Arizona, being the third since the current solar cycle began in 2019.
The Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, forecasts that the northern lights will be seen next Thursday in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Indiana, Maine, and Maryland.
The aurora borealis occur when magnetic solar winds impact the atmosphere and cause luminosity in the atoms located in the upper part of the atmosphere.
