The Lebanese climate is not limited to political fluctuations, but is also affected by climate changes in its surroundings, and is therefore threatened by the arrival of a “highly polluted dust” storm.
In an interview with “Lebanon Debate”, environmental expert Dr. Domit Kamel points out that “dust storms and air masses saturated with dust have begun to strike several areas in the Arab countries, the last of which is in Iraq, where visibility has reached 400 meters due to the very high dust density.”
He pointed out that “the level of dust pollution in Iraq has reached the limits of 3 km, and this thing threatens all living creatures, especially humans, who inhale the dust that enters the human lungs.”
And Domite points out that “a very strong dust storm entered the State of Kuwait, and began to control all parts of the country.”
As for Lebanon, he said: “Lebanon has witnessed, since the beginning of this year, several dust storms, which differed from one another in terms of their severity.”
He added: “But today, Lebanon is exposed to very dangerous dusty air masses, which are centered over the eastern Mediterranean, and visibility has decreased to 800 meters, and this storm comes from the Great Desert, and it is likely that it will enter Lebanon, all parts of the country, which will cause the occurrence of high dust storms. pollution”.
The environmental expert called on the Lebanese to take cover and close all windows and doors in a tight manner, and not to be exposed to the air directly, stressing that “Lebanon is within the climate change zone, and Lebanon will be affected by all these global changes.”
But he explains that “this dust that will reach Lebanon from the eastern Mediterranean, if it meets a semi-cold climate and rains, may cause a good natural condition for trees and forests.”
As for the areas that will be affected, Domit said, “The southern regions will be affected more greatly by these storms, more than the northern regions and Akkar, and we may be able to see the dust pollution coming with the naked eye.”
