Budapest begins preparations for significant increase in river flow Danubewhich crosses the capital, reaching levels not seen in ten years, and its probable overflow in the coming hours and days, part of these measures is the restriction of traffic.
“The biggest flood in a decade is approaching Budapest, which is why we have closed the quays and Margaret Island (located in the Danube in the city centre) from Monday evening,” Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony said on Tuesday.
Authorities are installing mobile barriers and temporary dams to deal with flooding in the vicinity of the river.
Preparations in Budapest for imminent flooding
Experts expect the water level of the Danube in Budapest to reach 851 centimetres between Friday and Saturday, around 40 centimetres less than the all-time high set in 2013.
The highest alert (level 3) has been declared due to the risk of flooding in several sections of the Danube and the Lakhta River.
The Danube floods that have been recorded in Austria in recent days are expected to reach towns near the border with the Alpine republic, such as Györ, today, where specialized teams and volunteers worked all night to install flood protections.
In several towns along the Danube, such as Györ, Szentendre and Nagymaros, dams and embankments have been installed on the river banks. Meanwhile, on other stretches of the Danube, work to install mobile dams and embankments continued on Tuesday.
Several roads in the northwest of the country have been closed to traffic.
In the face of the tense situation, Hungary’s ultra-nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has cancelled all his international engagements.
The flooding in Hungary will be a consequence of the large amounts of water that storm Boris has brought to Austria’s rivers over the last five days.
According to weather forecasts, no rain is expected in Hungary for the next ten days.
