The market research institute Counterpoint is using the past year as an opportunity to look at sales figures in the smartphone segment to look back and make initial predictions. While the global smartphone market is expected to decline, sales in the premium segment are expected to continue to rise.

Counterpoint rates smartphones starting at $600 as premium devices, so the expected growth of 6 percent is hardly surprising. Nevertheless, new record values are probably being written again. The premium segment is expected to account for almost a quarter of the global smartphone market and 60 percent of sales in 2023.

Due to the importance of smartphones, consumers are now more willing to spend more money on higher quality or higher priced devices. In addition, many flagships have often become a kind of status symbol, especially in emerging markets. Sales records are expected in the premium segment in China, India and Latin America.

In the area of premium smartphones, Apple remains the market leader, although the share has fallen compared to the previous year compared to 2022. Huawei in particular has regained share in the Chinese market and Samsung was certainly able to score points with its foldables in addition to the S23 series.

The exciting figure is that a third of premium smartphones are expected to be in the price segment over $1,000 in 2023 (“ultra-premium segment”).
