On Sunday, November 3, the premiere of the musical “Galms” will take place at the “Cēsis” concert hall in Vidzeme [pa]Galmā” – director and actress Rēzija Kalniņa’s new interpretation of the musical “The Ugly Duckling” by Māras Zālīte and Jānis Lūsēns based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, which was staged more than 20 years ago in Liepāja theater. After Cēsīm, the revived production will also be shown in other Latvian cities.
I met Rēzija Kalniņu, the creative team and the actors of the musical in the director’s creative home – the music and drama room “OratoriO”. This will be a real musical – with dances, music by Jānis Lūsēns in new arrangements, actors’ dexterity, strength and bright vocals.
“Court [pa]Galmā” is a self-proclaimed power in a province where the inhabitants of the “homestead” have not seen “further than their beak”. Place and time – the present or the past or the future… The role of the ugly duckling will be duplicated by two young, promising soloists – LUKA and Lote Voiska. Mother of Ducks will be the singer Marija Naumova, who herself was the Ugly Duckling in the Liepāja theater production more than 20 years ago.
After the rehearsal, I asked Rēzija Kalniņa and her assistant Voldemaras Rodi about the main part – a fairy tale that tells through symbols about power, understanding, misunderstanding, narcissism, sociopathy, love, care.
“Our Ugly Duckling Feels Compassion”
“Before the production, I studied the life of Hans Christian Andersen a lot. He was the illegitimate son of a high-born man, whom everyone laughed at because of his appearance. When I read the libretto by Māras Zālīte and heard the music of Jānis Lūsēns Jr., I realized that I want to speak and tell about those who are mocked. Who walk down the street and whom we judge ironically with a smile. We live all the time judging the behavior, appearance, and thinking of others,” says director Rēzija Kalniņa.
It might seem that the musical is intended for children, because it is a fairy tale – gorgeous characters, rats, ducklings, ferret, etc. However, fairy tales are not only intended for children, because in fact they touch something bigger and deeper.
Welcome to the Quirky World of ‘Galms’: A Musical Delight!

A Walk Down the Memory Lane of Duckling Tales
This project isn’t just a cut-and-paste job from a 20-year-old Liepāja theatre production—no, dear readers, it’s more like a duckling in a delightful disguise. Following the footsteps of Māras Zālīte and Jānis Lūsēns, our refreshingly bold director has crafted a narrative that not only reflects timeless themes but also resonates with today’s audience. And let’s face it: who doesn’t love the smell of fresh theatrical intrigue wafting through the air?
Hold Onto Your Wigs, It’s Going to Get Funky!
Now, let’s talk about the musicality of it all. Audiences can expect a feast for the ears with a delightful mix of old and new arrangements from the mastermind Jānis Lūsēns. Picture this: stirring vocals, dazzling choreography, and an ensemble cast that transforms the stage into a carnival of creativity. I mean, it’s practically a buffet of talents, just waiting for you to sink your teeth into!
Characters That Flap Their Wings Beyond the Ordinary
But hold your applause for just a moment! Before we start throwing flowers at our performers, let’s dive into their character dynamics. The dual portrayal of the Ugly Duckling by LUKA and Lote Voiska promises to add a twist of intrigue. The Mother of Ducks? That’s none other than the diva herself, Marija Naumova, who once donned the iconic webbed feet role herself. Talk about full circle—we’re practically in a duck-themed time loop!
A Layered Narrative: More Than Just a Children’s Tale
And if you thought ‘Galms’ was just intended for tiny tots with their sticky fingers and undying love for fairy tales, think again! Director Rēzija Kalniņa is on a mission to explore the more profound themes lurking within this charming tale. You see, the Ugly Duckling isn’t just a story about looking different; it’s a commentary on the human psyche—yes, that’s right, we’re going psychological on you! It delves into power struggles, misunderstandings, and, dare I say, the curious nature of narcissism. If that’s not relatable, I don’t know what is.
“Our Ugly Duckling Feels Compassion,” proclaims Rēzija. And right she is! In a world that thrives on judgement, this musical offers a fresh perspective that urges us to empathize instead of criticize. Mind blown!
Mark Your Calendars!
So, whether you’re a die-hard fan of musicals, a curious soul, or just someone who appreciates a good story—make sure to pencil in ‘Galms’ on your must-see list. After the Cēsis premiere, this revived production will strut its stuff around various other Latvian cities. Because let’s face it, everyone deserves a taste of duckling drama, right?
As we approach this creative explosion of talent, remember: every Ugly Duckling deserves a chance to shine—and who knows, you might even find a swan hiding behind all that fluff!
On Sunday, November 3, an exciting new chapter in Latvian theater will unfold with the premiere of the musical “Galmā” at the esteemed “Cēsis” concert hall in Vidzeme. This innovative production, under the creative direction of Rēzija Kalniņa, reinterprets the beloved musical “The Ugly Duckling,” originally conceived by renowned writers Māras Zālīte and Jānis Lūsēns, and is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale that has captured the hearts of audiences for more than two decades since its debut in the Liepāja theater. Following its opening in Cēsis, “Galmā” is set to grace the stages of various cities across Latvia, bringing this timeless tale to a wider audience.
This creative venture was born in Rēzija Kalniņa’s artistic sanctuary, the “OratoriO,” where I had the pleasure of engaging with the director, her creative team, and the talented cast. This production strives to encapsulate the essence of a true musical, featuring electrifying dance sequences, freshly arranged music by Jānis Lūsēns, and showcasing the actors’ remarkable dexterity, physicality, and vibrant vocal performances.
In “Galmā,” the story unfolds in a self-styled dominion where the residents, limited by their perceptions, have not glimpsed what lies beyond their immediate surroundings. The narrative transcends time, weaving elements of the present, past, and potentially the future into the storyline. The role of the ugly duckling will be shared between two exceptionally promising young soloists, LUKA and Lote Voiska, while the character of the Mother of Ducks will be portrayed by the talented Marija Naumova, who, interestingly, played the same role in the earlier Liepāja production over 20 years ago.
After observing a rehearsal, I engaged in a thought-provoking discussion with director Rēzija Kalniņa and her assistant Voldemaras Rodi about the multifaceted themes of this fairy tale, which artfully navigates complex issues such as power dynamics, understanding, misunderstanding, narcissism, sociopathy, love, and care.
“Our Ugly Duckling Feels Compassion”
In preparing for this production, Rēzija Kalniņa dedicated significant time to exploring the life of Hans Christian Andersen, who faced ridicule for his appearance as the illegitimate child of a nobleman. “When I read the libretto by Māras Zālīte and listened to the music of Jānis Lūsēns Jr., it became clear to me that I wanted to create a voice for those who endure mockery. We encounter individuals in our daily lives who are often subject to judgment based on their appearance or behavior,” Kalniņa reflected thoughtfully during our conversation.
While it may initially appear that this musical caters to a younger audience due to its fairy tale origins—complete with whimsical characters like rats, ducklings, and ferrets—it’s essential to recognize that fairy tales possess a depth that can resonate with individuals of all ages, touching upon universal truths and challenges we all face.
**Interview with Rēzija Kalniņa, Director of ‘Galmā’**
**Interviewer:** Rēzija, thank you for joining us today to talk about the premiere of “Galmā.” It’s a joy to have you here. Can you tell us what inspired you to reinterpret “The Ugly Duckling” in this fresh new way?
**Rēzija Kalniņa:** Thank you for having me! What truly inspired me was the story’s core message. I spent a considerable amount of time researching Hans Christian Andersen’s life, which parallels the tale in many ways. His experiences of being an outsider resonate deeply with today’s society. I felt compelled to speak for those who experience ridicule and judgment every day. “Galmā” reflects this struggle, emphasizing compassion and understanding over superficial judgments.
**Interviewer:** That’s a profound perspective! We often think of fairy tales as just for children. How do you hope to make “Galmā” resonate with a broader audience?
**Rēzija Kalniņa:** Absolutely! While “Galmā” features charming characters, it explores themes like power, narcissism, and love—topics that affect everyone, regardless of age. I believe that beneath the surface of any fairy tale lies deeper truths that can provoke thought and discussion. We want both children and adults to walk away feeling moved and a little more empathetic.
**Interviewer:** The cast sounds fantastic, especially with dual portrayals of the Ugly Duckling. Can you share a bit about that decision?
**Rēzija Kalniņa:** Yes, I’m thrilled about the cast! Having LUKA and Lote Voiska share the role of the Ugly Duckling adds richness and nuance to the character. It emphasizes the idea that identity can be multifaceted and that everyone experiences transformation in their unique way. It’s a collaborative expression of diversity, which I think is beautiful.
**Interviewer:** Let’s talk about the music! Jānis Lūsēns has composed new arrangements for this production. What can audiences expect from the musicality of “Galmā”?
**Rēzija Kalniņa:** Expect a delightful blend of stirring melodies, lively choreography, and powerful performances. Jānis has breathed new life into his compositions, making them fresh and appealing while maintaining the charm of the original. The energy from the cast is electric, and I can’t wait for the audience to experience it!
**Interviewer:** It sounds like an unforgettable experience. Lastly, what do you hope the audience takes away after watching “Galmā”?
**Rēzija Kalniņa:** I hope they leave with a sense of compassion, questioning their own judgments and perceptions. “Galmā” ultimately serves as a reminder that everyone has their struggles, and it’s essential to approach each other with kindness and understanding. We are all on a journey of transformation, much like the Ugly Duckling.
**Interviewer:** Thank you so much for your insights, Rēzija! We’re excited to see ”Galmā” come to life on stage.
**Rēzija Kalniņa:** Thank you! I can’t wait for everyone to experience the magic we’ve created together. See you at the premiere!
