Unpacking Belgium’s Political Comic Relief: BDW Political Beast
Picture this: a film premiere as exciting as watching paint dry in Parliament! But wait, it’s called ‘BDW Political Beast’—Belgium’s first foray into the genre of political documentaries! And who do we have gracing the red carpet? None other than the notorious political heavyweight Bart De Wever and investigative journalist Paul Jambers, strutting their stuff at the Kinepolis Antwerp. Seriously, it’s practically a celebrity bugle call. The paparazzi were on fire, like they just found a treasure map to the world’s funniest political scandal!
A Documentary with a Twist of Humor
Now, before you think this is just another dry political dribble, let me tell you—this film is touted to be a “political film” with a sprinkle of humor. Yes, you heard right! Finally, politicians are giving us something other than regulatory eye-glazing to focus on. Bart De Wever, the film’s main character, or should I say “protagonist,” is not just any politician; he’s like a gladiator, but instead of swords, he’s wielding soundbites and some serious social media strategy!
The documentary takes us straight into the whirlwind of elections, where emotions run high, and so do the stakes. De Wever actually said, “Wow, I didn’t know I was such a saw guy!”—which is rich coming from someone whose political career has seen more ups and downs than a yo-yo at a child’s birthday party! For someone whose life is a continuous loop of election day, one can imagine the rollercoaster of emotions on display. Just hope the camera doesn’t get stuck on his frowning face—it might shatter the lens!
In the Ring with Bart De Wever
And who else is in the film? A veritable roster of Flemish celebrities all eager to catch a glimpse of the “political animal” in action. It’s an impressive cast! You could say the actual political journalists were slightly nervous—after all, showing up is one thing, but catching a glimpse of a politician swinging a microphone like a medieval sword is another! But fret not; Bart even promised not to punch any journalists, which may come as a relief for them. Can you imagine the headlines? “Wicked Waffler Opens a Can of Whoop-Ass!”
In a world where political commentaries are dry, the film dares to invite a chuckle. After all, nothing breaks the tension of political discourse like a little humor! A little self-analysis thrown in there, too. Bart seems to understand that not only are the audiences watching him, but he’s also putting himself on the couch for all to see, like a political therapy session. We might just need a popcorn and a therapist’s chair for this one!
The Bottom Line
‘BDW Political Beast’ isn’t just confined to dull debates and the same state of unhappiness that accompanies most political films. It’s a humorous dive into the mindset of one of Belgium’s most captivating politicians while offering a candid look into the chaotic circus that is election day. It’s distributed by Kinepolis Film Distribution (KFD), and it’s being screened in Belgian cinemas today!
So if you fancy a documentary with a personality, or simply wish to observe politics through a comedic lens, grab your tickets and prepare to laugh as you wonder how on earth we ended up with politicians like these! Or maybe you’ll just marvel at how they can turn a campaign into a soap opera. Whatever tickles your fancy!
Don’t forget to check out our photo gallery from the premiere, where you can relish in all the glamorous chaos that unfolds on the red carpet. Just remember: it’s all politics, and only slightly humorous!
This styled commentary embraces the humor and observational sharpness of personalities like Jimmy Carr and Ricky Gervais while maintaining a light, engaging tone reminiscent of Rowan Atkinson and Lee Evans. It brings forth the nuances of the political film while entertaining readers with a cheeky twist and a conversational style.
‘BDW Political Beast’ premiered in Kinepolis Antwerp in the presence of Bart De Wever, Paul Jambers and the film crew. This premiere of the very first political film enjoyed a good turnout. There was not only a lot of press on the red carpet, but also many famous Flemish people who were eager to catch a glimpse of Paul Jambers & Bart De Wever. When the premiere in room nine was over, Catherine Moerkerke asked Bart De Wever what he thought of it: “Wow, I didn’t know I was such a saw guy!”. He also promised not to hit any of the political journalists, as was shown more than once in the film.
Synopsis: This documentary tries to look into the mind of one of the most striking and intriguing Belgian politicians of the last decades, Bart De Wever. BDW is more than a politician par excellence, he breathes, smells and feels politics. The documentary follows BDW during the most important period in a politician’s life, namely during the elections. Ten years ago, Paul Jambers was the only journalist who had the opportunity to make recordings of BDW behind the scenes on election day. He was able to do this again during the subsequent 5 elections. While BDW experiences a rollercoaster of emotions on election day, the camera never leaves his side for a moment. He lets himself go completely, shows himself as he is and analyzes himself. “A political animal smells politics, that needs no explanation,” he says. Politics is his life, everything must give way to it. The events are viewed through the eyes of BDW, he is the subject and at the same time the protagonist in an exciting story
Which BVs were present? You can see that in our photo folder just as you see the arrival of Paul Jambers and Bart De Wever. Enjoy the photos and be sure to take a look at the cinema. ‘BDW Political Beast’ is not a boring political affair, but it is a ‘political film’ with some humor woven into it. (PADI – photos Patje)
