It was the attacker’s first game following being sidelined over Putin’s offensive war on Ukraine. Yarmolenko grew up in the city of Chernihiv and has won 106 caps for his country so far.

“It was so emotional for me because of the situation in my country. It’s so hard to think regarding football right now. The Russian army is killing people in Ukraine every day,” Yarmolenko, who was voted player of the game, tells Sky Sports. “To be honest, I don’t know what to say. I want to thank my team, who always support me. I felt the support of the fans, I wanted to give my all on the field.”

And he did!
