“Premier League to Allow Supporters to Listen to Referees and VAR Conversations: A Move Towards Transparency”

The Daily Mail reports that discussions are underway between the PGMOL – the body governing match refereeing in England – and clubs so that conversations with VAR can be heard by supporters. This is part of a concern for transparency after some controversy this season.

While the sound system of Ligue 1 referees has been tested, the Premier League could also take a first step towards more transparency. This would in any case be the wish of Howard Webb, the boss of the PGMOL – the body governing the arbitration of matches in England – since last December.

Conversations between referees and VAR made public after games?

According to Daily Mail, discussions are said to be underway between this body and the elite clubs in order to allow supporters to listen to the conversations between the referees on the pitch and those of the VAR after the matches. The idea would be to demystify certain decision-making and explain more how these can be taken, at the same time as this should allow fans to have another image of the officials.

At the level of legislation, the Ifab – which enacts the laws of the game – considers that there would be no problem a priori for these recordings to be made public as long as they are published after the meetings (and not in direct). A few days ago, the same organization had refused France’s request to sound the referees live next season in Ligue 1 and during the final of the Coupe de France.

The reception of the refereeing corps and the clubs would be just as positive, reports the British daily. Still, there are concerns that the move will open Pandora’s box, in the sense that some managers may want to hear audio from previous contentious calls that have taken place this season. The Daily Mail reports, however, that a deal is unlikely to be reached between the various parties before the start of the next financial year, in 2023-2024.
