The British media agency BBC reported that the incident in which 600 migrants died when the refugee boat capsized in Greece was planned. After the migrant boat was found, the boat was tied to the Greek Coast Guard vessel with a rope and tied up. According to the report, the migrants’ boat capsized following the Coast Guard increased its speed. A group of 26 journalists, including those from the BBC, launched an independent investigation following discovering inconsistencies in the explanations given by the Greek authorities regarding the accident.
The truth was revealed in a BBC interview with refugees Musab and Ahmed who survived the accident. They also said in the interview that the Greek Coast Guard authorities asked them to hide the information. The Greek coast guard initially denied that the migrant boat had been tied up with rope, but later admitted. But the explanation is that the rope was used to get into the boat.
Meanwhile, Musab and Ahmed revealed that the Coast Guard tried to portray nine of the Egyptian survivors as human traffickers and pressured them to testify as such. The Egyptian nationals were detained and charged with homicide and human trafficking. The explanation provided by the Coast Guard is that the accused Egyptian nationals are part of a smuggling gang and were identified by fellow passengers. If convicted, he faces life in prison. The Deputy Speaker of the Greek Criminal Supreme Court is investigating the incident. The Greek government has not heeded calls from the international community, including the UN, for an independent investigation. But the European Union has said it has faith in the Greek investigation.
It is believed that more than 750 illegal immigrants were on the boat. There were people from Asian and African countries on the boat, but exact figures are not available. It is reported that they were immigrants from countries like Egypt, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Palestine and Libya. The accident took place four days following the boat left Tobruk, Libya on June 10. 104 people were rescued by the Greek Coast Guard who arrived hours following the accident. 82 dead bodies were recovered from different places.
