A DOCTOR specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, a graduate of the University of North Sumatra, Medan, Binarwan Halim, said that pregnant women who are fasting should avoid eating or drinking too much sweet food when breaking the fast to prevent weight gain.
“Don’t have too much sweetness, too much oily is not good, take care of weight gain,” said Binarwan, quoted Monday (11/3).
He said that it is feared that increasing body weight in pregnant women will cause diabetes in late pregnancy or pregnancy poisoning due to an increase in hypertension.
The weight gain recommended by obstetricians is 10 to 12 kilograms for those with normal weight. If you are too fat during pregnancy, the recommended weight gain is around 6-9 kilograms, while for those who have a thin body, you can increase your weight by around 15 kilograms and above.
So it is necessary to control food intake because it can be dangerous for the mother and the fetus she is carrying.
Binarwan said that if pregnant mothers are fasting, they should try to consume enough protein because the fetus is formed from meat which requires high protein for perfect formation.

“You have to pay attention to foods high in protein, whether in the form of fish, milk, eggs, tempeh, tofu,” he said.
Fasting is also recommended for pregnant women who have good and strong immune systems to fast following consulting an obstetrician.
Severe dehydration can disrupt the pregnancy process, so if you feel you are not strong enough to fast, you are advised to stop fasting.
The nausea and vomiting that is often experienced during early pregnancy also often makes a mother decide not to fast, because it might harm the fetus and cause the mother to get sick because her immune system is down.
“If you can’t, don’t force it, you will get sick because severe dehydration will interfere with the pregnancy, so try it for a day or two first, if you have a fever or flu because your immune system is down, stop first,” concluded Binarwan. (Ant/Z-1)
