Preferential Treatment for Wealthy Clients in Belfius Bank: Revealing Internal Documents

Does Belfius Bank grant preferential treatment to its wealthiest clients? This is what Het Laatste Nieuws reveals in any case, which had access to internal Belfius documents. Depending on the status and wealth of customers, Belfius would divide them into different categories, the first of which would have priority with regard to support, particularly by telephone. The bank would therefore operate with “Gold”, “Silver”, “Bronze”, “Rubis” customers and the other customers would be referred to as “the rest”. Former Belfius employees confirmed that the speed of support “depends on the thickness of the wallet”.

This practice itself is not new in the private banking sector, but what is problematic in the case of Belfius is that this bank is 100% owned by the Belgian state. This is why Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem reacted badly to the revelations in the Dutch-speaking daily. “That ordinary savers are now being pushed into the background, whether by telephone or email, is completely unacceptable,” he said, asserting that he “immediately demanded explanations from Belfius management ”. “Every customer has the right to be treated with the same respect, the same as that enjoyed by wealthier customers or shareholders.”
